The Gathering House
A warm contemporary residence designed for connection, calm living, and multi-generational family life.
Set within a quiet Ottawa neighbourhood, The Gathering House was designed as a refined yet deeply livable home for proud grandparents relocating to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The vision for the residence was rooted in togetherness — creating a home that could effortlessly support family dinners, overnight guests, celebrations, quiet mornings, and the rhythms of everyday life, all within a calm and grounded architectural setting.
Working alongside designer Thu Vu of Axiom and Bedrock Developments Inc., Absolute Cabinets delivered a full-home millwork package that balanced contemporary detailing with warmth, softness, and functionality. The result is a home that feels elevated without feeling formal — tailored yet relaxed, modern yet inviting.
The scope of the project extended throughout nearly every major living space in the home, including the kitchen, dining room, living room, powder room, mudroom, office, laundry room, primary ensuite and walk-in closet, basement bath, wet bar, crafts room, and additional family spaces. While each room carries its own identity, the millwork language remains cohesive throughout, creating a seamless architectural flow from space to space.
At the heart of the home sits an oversized entertaining kitchen designed to support both large family gatherings and daily living. Rift cut white oak cabinetry finished in a custom “Wild Honey” stain introduces warmth and texture, while coloured lacquer cabinetry and integrated appliances maintain visual calm and reduce clutter. Thoughtful lighting, open display shelving, hidden storage, and carefully balanced proportions allow the space to feel expansive without losing intimacy.
Across the home, the millwork was designed to soften the clean architectural lines of the residence while maintaining a restrained contemporary aesthetic. Matte black hardware, subtle detailing, and layered material transitions create depth without excess. Storage solutions were intentionally integrated throughout to support low-maintenance living while preserving the clean visual language of the interiors.

One of the most personal spaces within the home is the custom crafts room designed for the grandchildren. Built around creativity and family interaction, the room includes tailored organizational features — including custom wrapping paper storage designed to remain fully functional while still feeling visually refined. Filled with the grandchildren’s artwork and designed to encourage gathering and creativity, the space captures the emotional heart of the project.
Despite the distance of the Ottawa site from Absolute Cabinets’ Barrie facility, the project progressed with remarkable smoothness through detailed coordination, careful planning, and strong collaboration between all teams involved. Precision in measuring, installation, and execution ensured the final result maintained the high level of fit and finish expected throughout the home.
The completed residence feels exactly as intended: calm, welcoming, warm, and deeply connected to family living. More than a showcase of millwork, The Gathering House is a home designed to be lived in fully — where refined design supports everyday moments, and where contemporary architecture is softened by warmth, craftsmanship, and human connection.
